Inside Track
Into the lion’s den
pencer
Aronfeld is on a mission to bring a little bit of Al Franken to the land
of Rush Limbaugh. |
The Coral Gables personal injury attorney hit the airwaves of AM station
WKAT 1360 last month with his show “Ask the Lawyer.” The show’s seemingly
innocuous title masks Aronfeld’s intent to deal a death blow to the heart of
red state America.

Listeners likely find it jarring that Aronfeld’s hour of liberal lawyer
diatribes follows a show that features uber conservative pundit William
Bennett.

But Aronfeld, who fancies himself the Howard Stern of legal radio, welcomes
verbal tussles on his show, as long as callers don’t stoop to dirty words.

“It’s like my personal crusade,” he said. “I’m inviting controversy.”

Controversy accepted the invitation two weeks ago when Aronfeld hosted Amy
Ronner, St. Thomas University law professor and author of “Homophobia and
the Law.”

“We had a lot of angry callers,” Aronfeld said. “I couldn’t put them all on
the air, because we don’t allow profanity.”

The show already has run afoul of at least one sponsor, whom Aronfeld
declined to name. He said only that the sponsor was a Coral Gables
restaurant whose owners were surprised that the show was more than legal
questions and answers.

Ronner appeared on the second broadcast. The inaugural guest was nationally
prominent Miami defense attorney Roy Black.

Aronfeld said the show was inspired by a desire to educate conservatives
about the liberal side of legal issues, such as tort relief, insurance law
and gay rights. He hopes to give a boost to the besmirched image of personal
injury attorneys.

“Most people perceive us to be cigar-smoking, $2,000-suit wearing people who
don’t care about anyone else,” he said. “I don’t mean any disrespect to the
Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers and [the American Trial Lawyers
Association], but what they’re doing doesn’t seem to be working.”

Jan Schlichtmann, of “A Civil Action” fame, was scheduled for the next show,
which has a Saturday, 5 p.m. time slot. He will be followed by New York
attorney Barry Scheck of the Innocence Project.

Aronfeld’s dream guests include U.S. Chief Justice William Rehnquist and
Thomas Mesereau Jr., defense attorney in Michael Jackson’s child molestation
trial.

His ultimate hope is national syndication, so he can spread his message
deeper into the conservative hinterlands of America.

“Someone in Wichita, Kan., needs to hear the other side of the coin,” he
said, “because all they’re listening to now is Rush Limbaugh and Sean
Hannity.”
