The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered Bayer the maker of Yaz and Yasmin and other contraceptives to strengthen the warnings for blood-clots. Pills like Yasmin contain an artificial hormone called drospirenone or progestin. Research indicates that drospirenone may triple the risk for blood clots.

The FDA research shows more than 835,000 women took pills made with drospirenone, including Yasmin. In 2011 Yasmin was the No. 4 oral contraceptive in America. So far Bayer has paid $402.6 million in settlements for one category of blood clots.

Other birth control pills which contain drospirenone include:

Beyaz

Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol

Gianvi

Loryna

Ocella

Safyral

Syeda

Zarah

Our Florida Yasmin injury lawyers recommend that if you are currently taking a birth control pill that contains drospirenone you should talk to your doctor about their risk for blood clots. It is also important that healthcare professionals prescribing these kinds of drugs consider the risks and benefits of drospirenone-containing birth control pills and a woman’s risk for developing a blood clot before prescribing these drugs.

Simply put, the risk of developing a blood clot from a Yasmin or Yaz is higher than not using them; but lower than the risk of developing a blood clot during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.

It is very important to know the symptoms for blood clots, include persistent leg pain, severe chest pain and sudden shortness of breath. If you develop any of these symptoms immediately contact your doctor or call 911.
