This book was engaging mainly because it humanized the lawyer’s experience in an intimately honest way.It was deeply autobiographical while providing self-help inspiration for not just law students contemplating the solo journey, but seasoned attorneys in need of self-reflection. I was pleasantly surprised because I have read other similar books that take the lawyer’s personal journey out of the book causing the book to become a compilation of contributing marketers’ generic do’s and don’t’s. Other similar books sort of pat you on the back and say, “Yes, everyone can go do this.” Spencer, on the other hand, advises you to even take a job if offered because someone else is paying you while training you. Additionally, he points out that the journey is not about getting rich since the reality is that you can go broke but rise again especially if your true purpose is to really advocate for the people.
