Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest and 16th ship, the NCL Bliss has so many outrageous attractions onboard it might be difficult for some people to remember they are actually on a vessel whilst sailing around Alaska or the Caribbean. The Bliss is being built by MEYER WERFT in Papenburg, Germany and weighs in at 167,800 gross tons and will accommodate up to 4,000 passengers. Bliss will rank among the ten largest cruise vessels in the world.
The Bliss is the third ship in NCL’s Breakaway-Plus class, and will be the largest NCL cruise ship to ever set sail in Alaska’s fragile marine zone- this summer- which will include Ports of Call Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria, British Columbia. Later this fall the ship will relocate to Miami and offer cruises around the Caribbean.
The Bliss is scheduled to be christened in May by Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, a nationally syndicated radio personality; who is very well known here in Miami- which is where NCL has its corporate headquarters. Mr. Duran will be considered the ship’s “godfather” a choice I don’t really understand nor endorse. NCL’s CEO Frank Del Rio has chosen some other celebs in the past that make more sense to me such as Pitbull, Sex in the City’s Kim Cattrall, Reba McEntire, Rosie O’Donnell, Chinese pop star Wang Leehom and the Radio City Rockettes. Perhaps, selecting Mr. Duran was intended to get thousands of dollars of free advertisement on his radio show when he appears in Seattle to smash a bottle of champagne across the bow?
The Bliss features a 180-degree Observation Lounge, which will promise incredible views of Alaska’s glaciers. But certainly the Bliss’s most exciting attractions are the largest two level electric go kart race track at sea, incredible and terrifying water slides that project off the sides of the ship called Ocean Loops; and a laser tag game that looks like it is a scene from the latest Star Wars thriller.
Foodies won’t be disappointed or bored- as the Bliss has an array of dining options to suit every palate. I will probably be the first one in line to book a table at Q, the Bliss’s new BBQ restaurant which appears to be a real honky-tonk at sea- with authentic Texas Barbecue and live country western music where passengers will be able to eat, drink and dance the night away.
For those who prefer more sophisticated dining, the Bliss offers fresh local seafood at Ocean Blue and an Italian restaurant that will serve diner’s both indoors and outdoors authentic Tuscan cuisine. I am sure my wife and kids will be found at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Sea looking for my lost shaker of salt, or at Los Lobos’ Mexican or the Cagney Steakhouse. After dinner, you can sign me up to watch the Broadway hit show the Jersey Boys or to hang out at an onboard recreation of the Beatles’ famous Cavern Club which will feature a Beatles tribute band.
