The use of the popular baby formulas Enfamil and Similac has been linked to life-threatening cases of necrotizing enterocolitis, or NEC, in premature babies.
Necrotizing enterocolitis is a disease that involves inflammation in the intestines of premature infants. The inflammation causes intestinal tissue to die and a perforation in the intestine may form. Through this perforation, bacteria and stool can leak into the infant’s abdomen or bloodstream, leading to infection and, in some cases, death. Enfamil and Similac are both cow milk-based formula brands, which can be dangerous to premature infants as they increase risk for NEC development.
Abbott and Mead Johnson, the manufacturers of Similac and Enfamil, failed to include safety warnings that could have cautioned consumers as to the potentially fatal dangers associated with cow-milk-based formulas. Although cow-milk-based formulas are successful for increasing caloric intake in premature babies, an infant’s gut is not mature enough to process the different bacterial content it contains as opposed to human milk.
