The newest trend in the cruise industry is for cruise companies to purchase private destination islands where they can offer exclusive attractions for their passengers. Royal Caribbean is cashing in on the trend with its newest CoCo Cay destination island in the Bahamas. After spending $250 million to renovate the island, Royal Caribbean is officially debuting their most recent creation – Perfect Day at Coco Cay.
Islands feature a new water park, including a 135-foot tall water slide and freshwater lagoon. The park also has a helium balloon that will take guests up 450 feet to view the island. Another excursion offered on the island is a 1,600 foot-long zip-line attraction. The attraction spans a total of 125 acres and can accommodate up to 10,000 people at one time.
Cruise passengers can enjoy a full day at the water park for the cost of $44 to $99 per person. If you wish to take a ride on the zip-line, the cost ranges from $79 to $139 per person. Similarly, the cost to ride on the balloon ride is anywhere from $39 to $99 per person. Costs vary based on the season.
So far, 11 of the Royal Caribbean ships are expected to visit Perfect Day in 2019, including the Empress, Symphony of the Seas, and Navigator of the Seas. The company has installed a new pier, which allows their larger ships in the Oasis class to dock at the island.
Royal Caribbean does not plan to stop with this one island either. They are currently in the planning stages for four more private island destinations in the Caribbean, Asia and Australia, although no locations have been officially announced.

MSC Cruises has a private destination in the Bahamas that they will be debuting this November. They plan on offering activities, such as snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. They are completing a renovation of Princess Cays to allow for larger tenders, as well as bicycle tours and clear-bottom kayaking, Norwegian Cruise is currently upgrading its private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay and plans to feature luxury beachfront villas and a Mandara Spa. Virgin Voyages, a newcomer to the cruise industry, is currently building a private beach club open only to its passengers on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, where they plan to throw beach parties for their passengers.
These new islands offered through cruise companies change the way they handle island excursions to their passengers. Rather than having the passenger seek entertainment off the ship through a third-party company, they will be able to do this through the control and supervision of the cruise company.
