Cruise Lines Adjusting Itineraries Due To Cartel Violence in Mexico
Several major cruise lines are changing their itineraries after deadly clashes between cartels and authorities left dozens of people dead in Mexico. The violence erupted following a military operation that killed a prominent cartel leader, prompting security concerns for passenger safety.
Mexican army forces killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, during an operation in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco on February 22, 2026.
El Mencho is one of Mexico’s most wanted drug lords, and well-known for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine to the United States. According to the Associated Press, he staged attacks against government officials who challenged him.

MSC Cruises will sail to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico but shore excursions may be rerouted or cancelled.
The U.S. State Department expanded its warning to travelers to shelter in place across multiple regions of Mexico, including popular tourist hot spots: Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, Tijuana, and Puerto Vallarta.
Royal Caribbean currently does not have ships in the affected areas, but some of their shore excursions in Ensenada, Mexico have been affected.
