Between the years 1957-1987, Camp Lejeune’s water supply was heavily contaminated by toxic chemicals. The amount of toxicity present in the water at the time was 200-300 times higher than modern government health standards. Domestic and foreign U.S military bases are more than just housing stations for soldiers, but actually contain neighborhoods, schools, and other facilities for families and larger communities. In 1984, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Marine Corps “discovered specific volatile organic compounds” from the water treatment plants being used by Camp Lejeune, as well as from fuel leaks.
