The Kids’ Club: What Could Go Wrong?

Like thousands of families who plan cruise ship vacations, you’ve probably heard of and are looking forward to the kids’ clubs on board. These clubs, which are an almost universal element of every major cruise ship, – such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian –  are designed to keep children entertained and safe while their parents enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation. However, accidents can happen, and unfortunately, children can get hurt while participating in the many activities provided to them at the club.

Our office has dealt with countless cases of children suffering injuries while participating in the kids’ clubs on cruise ships.

Common causes of Kids’ Club injuries include:

  • Slips and falls
  • Collisions with other children or equipment
  • Abuse or neglect by staff members

While cruise lines are supposed to take reasonable steps to prevent such accidents from happening, they don’t always do so. The counselors, staff members and directors hired to safeguard the activities at Kids’ Clubs are often inexperienced with children and lack the necessary training needed to ensure the safety of young passengers. There is typically a very wide variety of activities provided to Kids’ Club attendants, and some are much safer than others:

  1. Arts and Crafts – Kids can get creative with a variety of arts and crafts activities, such as painting, drawing, and making jewelry or puppets.
  2. Games – Board games, video games, and outdoor games like mini-golf or basketball are popular activities for kids of all ages.
  3. Scavenger Hunts – Kids can explore the ship on a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt, following clues to find hidden objects and prizes.
  4. Educational Activities – Some kids’ clubs offer educational activities like science experiments, language lessons, or cultural experiences that allow kids to learn while having fun.
  5. Sports – Many cruise ships have sports facilities like rock-climbing walls, mini-golf courses, or ice-skating rinks that are specifically designed for kids.
  6. Cooking Classes – Some cruise lines offer cooking classes for kids where they can learn how to make simple recipes and snacks.
  7. Movie Nights – Kids can watch their favorite movies in a dedicated movie theater or on a big screen outside under the stars.

Most of the injuries that take place at Kids Clubs’ activities are completely avoidable. Many of the cases our maritime personal injury team of lawyers have handled involve sports related accidents such as Dodgeball or Basketball, where the ages of participants can sometimes range from 5-18, endangering the younger players to the disproportionate strength of post pubescent passengers.

What If Somebody I Know Was Injured At The Kids’ Club?

If your child or acquaintance has been injured in a kids’ club on a cruise ship, you may be wondering what your legal options are. The first step is to seek medical attention for your child and document the injuries. You should also report the incident to the cruise line as soon as possible, and avoid signing forms they hand you before speaking with an attorney.

It’s important to understand that cruise lines have a legal duty to provide a reasonably safe environment for their passengers, including children. If they fail to meet this duty and a child is injured as a result, they may be held liable for the damages. This can include medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other costs associated with the injury. However, pursuing a legal claim against a cruise line can be complex. Cruise lines often have teams of lawyers on their side who will try to minimize their liability and protect their bottom line. That’s why it’s important to have an experienced maritime personal injury attorney on your side who can help you navigate the legal system and fight for your rights.
