A lawsuit has been filed against the Champlain Towers South Condominium Association on behalf of the victims involved in the Surfside condo collapse that occurred on June 24, 2021. The complaint alleges that the condominium association failed to ‘secure and safeguard the lives and property’ of those living in the building. Repair needs were identified with regard to certain structural issues but had not been implemented. ‘Through the exercise of ordinary care, safety measures and oversight,’ the collapse could have been prevented, according to the complaint.
While the cause of the building collapse is still under investigation, some believe a new high-rise building being constructed next to the towers may have compromised the integrity of the building. Champlain Towers Condo was up for its mandatory 40-year recertification process, confirmed Charles Burkett the Mayor of Surfside. Work had begun the roof, and the concrete restoration project was to follow.
The lawsuit is seeking more than $5 million in damages. The Champlain Towers’ South condo collapsed in the early morning hours on June 24, 2021. A total of 159 people remain unaccounted for, and three deaths have been reported. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families who tragically lost their lives as a result of this tragedy.
