At least three people have died, and an unknown number of people are still missing after the Champlain Towers’ South condo collapsed in the early morning on June 24, 2021. The 12-story residential building in the southeast corner of Surfside has more than 130 units. The northeast corridor of the condo building collapsed, approximately 55 apartment units. Only 35 occupants, including those injured and killed, were pulled from the rubble.

The Miami Dade Police Department and Miami Dade Fire Department are the lead agencies handling the investigation and search. Search and rescue dogs have been brought in to identify areas of interest. Rescue teams are currently conducting further searches in those areas using camera and sound equipment. Considering the seismic proportions of condo collapse, more victims are likely to be found trapped beneath the debris.

The collapse appeared to affect one leg of the L-shaped tower. Piles of rubble and debris surrounded the area just outside the building, and cars up to two blocks away were coated with a light layer of dust.

For now, the investigation into what exactly caused the Champlain Towers to collapse is ongoing, as are the recovery efforts to find those still missing. It was reported that some of the residents had complained that a new building that went up to the South used to shake their building, when they were putting the supports in. Construction was also be done on the Champlain Towers’ roof at the time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families who tragically lost their lives as a result of this tragedy.
