Silversea Cruises Debuts Its First Hybrid-Powered Ship

Silversea Cruises will launch its first hybrid-powered vessel, the Silver Nova, in the summer of 2023. The announcement came from Silversea executives during a traditional steel cutting ceremony in November in Papenburg, Germany.

The Silver Nova will have the capacity to carry 728 passengers, which is a notable increase from its current 596 passenger new builds. However, the unique aspect about this new ship is that it will use Liquefied Natural Gas as the vessel’s main source of fuel, along with hybrid fuel cells. The goal is to make the ship free of emissions at port, cutting down environmental hazards often associated with larger cruise vessels docking at ports.

The hybrid technology on the Silver Nova allows the vessel to have a 40 percent overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as compared to Silversea’s previous class of ships, the Muse Class.

The Silver Nova is part of Silversea’s Nova Class of ships. Silversea’s CEO said that the company’s goal is to preserve the planet through environmental healthy technology while not compromising on passenger comfort or luxury. The Silver Nova represents the long-term commitment that Silversea Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group has towards environmental sustainability.

The Silver Nova will have a space-to-guest ratio of 75 gross tons per passenger, which is the highest thus far in Silversea’s fleet of ships.

Other sustainable features of this new Nova Class of ships include a micro auto gasification system meant to reduce onboard waste volume and issuing lower incineration emissions. The Nova Class is also expected to earn an Energy Efficiency Design Index rating 25 percent better than other International Maritime Organization requirements.

When the Silver Nova docks at select ports, the vessel will be able to plug into onshore energy supplies, which will cut onboard local emissions to zero. The hope is that the new technology on the ship will reduce the ship’s overall impact on the environment.

Presale access for tickets will be available for members of Silversea’s loyalty program, travel advisors, and the Venetian Society beginning December 16, 2021. General ticket sales will open on January 6, 2022.
