Royal Caribbean Building What Could be the World’s Largest Cruise Ship!

Royal Caribbean, which currently operates 68 ships, announced it will be partnering with Finnish shipbuilder, Meyer Turku, to build a fourth vessel for its new Icon Class series.

Meyer Turku built the original ship in the Icon series, Icon of the Seas. It is also building the second in the series, Star of the Seas. This ship is set to begin sailing in the summer of 2025 from Cape Canaveral. A third, yet to be named Icon Class ship is also in the works from the Meyer Turku shipyard for delivery to Royal Caribbean in 2026.

Royal Caribbean has a history of rolling out ever bigger vessels in its series of new ships. For example, in the cruise lines Oasis-class series, each ship has been a little bigger than its predecessor. The Oasis-class ships were the world’s largest vessels until the Icon of the Seas.

Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,600 passengers, a new record for a passenger ship. Weighing 248,663 gross tons and measuring 365 meters (1,1967 feet), the Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. The bigger passenger capacity is partly due to Royal Caribbean’s focus on family. Cabins will include extra bunks to accommodate families with children, and amenities geared toward the same, featuring dozens of restaurants, theme parks, and “neighborhoods.”

With so many passengers on a single boat, there is a far greater need for cruise ship safety demonstrations, procedures, and other safety precautions. It can be incredibly difficult for a cruise company to impart all the necessary information to its guests, train all staff competently and thoroughly, and check each detail on such a large ship. Simply having this immense number of passengers onboard can lead to accidents, injuries, and illnesses.

All this impressive scale and growth by Royal Caribbean means bigger business for the company, but it also means that gaps in proper training or oversight by Royal Caribbean become more likely. The cruise line must provide the same attention to safety and protocol as its other mega-ships. Even on a brand-new boat, loose carpet, an irresponsible bartender, or mismarking a hazard could lead to Royal Caribbean’s liability for personal injuries.
