Miami-Dade County, or simply known to many local residents as “Dade” or “Miami-Dade”, is Florida’s most heavily populated as well as the seventh most populous county in the United States. Housing nearly 2.5 Million residents, Miami –Dade is Florida’s third largest County (in terms of land area). Created on January 18, 1836, under the Territorial Act of the United States, it was named after Francis L. Dade. Dade was a soldier who served in the Second Seminole War at Dade Battlefield—Which has since become a Historical Memorial located on Country Road 603, between Interstate 75 (I-75) and U.S. 301—as a Brevet Major in
the U.S. 4th Infantry Regiment. At the time of its inception, Dade County was comprised of, what would now be considered, present day Palm Beach and Broward Counties, in addition to a significant portion of the Florida Keys. Despite its dwindling size (due to redrawing county lines), Dade continues to attract an astounding number of tourists (welcoming 13.9 Million visitors in 2012, a 3.5% increase compared to that of its 2011 estimates).
