Florida Governor to Appeal Court Decision that Restricts Cruises from Sailing out of Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has promised to fight to overturn a recent court ruling that supports the CDC’s conditional sailing order when it comes to cruise ships. If necessary, taking the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The long-running battle between Florida and the CDC is over the Governor’s law banning so-called, ‘COVID-19 vaccine passports.’ This legislation has left cruise lines in a predicament, as they are unable to verify the vaccination status of passengers sailing from Florida.

This comes as Florida and the rest of the country face the spread of the Delta variant and a growing Covid-19 vaccine divide.

It makes it impossible for cruise lines to follow CDC guidance. The agency says that cruise lines offering sailings on ships with paying passengers need to make sure 95% of passengers are fully vaccinated before setting sail.

The CDC order led to the state filing a lawsuit in April in an attempt to take away authority of the federal health agency on the state’s cruise industry and lift the restrictions.

Last week, Norwegian Cruise Line, filed a lawsuit against Florida, claiming that said the state’s ban hurts its ability to prevent the spread of the virus onboard ships. The cruise line had announced in April that it would require all passengers and crew on its ships to be “100% vaccinated” two weeks before boarding. The company described the lawsuit as a “last resort,” saying the Florida law has put it in an “impossible dilemma.”
