Port Welcomes Its Largest Cruise Ship, the MSC Meraviglia This Year
Port Newport will be welcoming its largest cruise ship this year. Newport, Rhode Island, is scheduled to be a port of call for the MSC Meraviglia, which docked on September 25. This call is part of the MSC Meraviglia’s inaugural trip in its Canadian and New England season of cruises sailing out of New York City.
The MSC Meraviglia’s visit to Port Newport is part of the company’s larger expansion into the U.S. market. MSC Cruises will now be operating cruises from New York City, Miami, and Port Canaveral.

The MSC Meraviglia weighs in at 171,598 gross tons and will be carrying up to 5,700 guests to the quaint city, making it not only the largest cruise ship to make a stop in Newport this season but also the most guests to arrive on one vessel to the city.
The MSC Meraviglia sailed from New York City on September 24, stopping in Newport on September 25. This call brought a significant boost to the local economy. According to the cruise organization, CLIA, this call could bring in an estimated $2 million in local revenues as visitors will be able to explore the city, trying out the area’s famous seafood and patronizing local shops. For even just a one-day visit, the economic impact felt by Newport retail shops, restaurants and attractions will be significant.
After leaving Newport, the MSC Meraviglia will make stops in Boston, Massachusetts; Saint John, New Brunswick; Portland, Main; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. This sailing is the first of three voyages the MSC Meraviglia will be making along the New England coast this fall.
MSC Cruise Lines is hoping that cruises from New York City to New England and Canada will help the company expand further into the United States. Thus far, the response to these itineraries has been strong, and the cruise line hopes to bring thousands of tourists to the Newport area this cruise season with additional sailings.
Aside from cruises to the New England Coast, the MSC Meraviglia also sails on cruises to Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Currently, MSC Cruises has ships sailing from three major US homeports, namely Miami, Port Canaveral, and New York City.
