CDC Publishes Its List of Dirtiest Cruise Ships

Dirtiest Cruise Ships
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has released the results of a number of recent sanitation inspections conducted through its Vessel Sanitation Program, listing which ships are in fact, the dirtiest cruise ships at sea. Most passengers would agree that a ship’s sanitation standards are of high importance.  And we can tell you, that as cruise ship passenger attorneys, illnesses can spread quickly on these ships due to the tight quarters, which is why these sanitation scores are so important.

Cruise ships are inspected by the CDC twice a year through the Vessel Sanitation Program. These inspections come unannounced to catch the actual condition and quality standards on board. These sanitation inspections monitor any gastrointestinal illnesses carried by crew or passengers on the ship, as well as the water supply, food quality and overall cleanliness. Cruise vessels are rated on a scale of 100, and any ship that receives a score of 85 or below is said to have “failed” the inspection. The following ships received a failing grade by the CDC.

1. Oceania Insignia

Oceania Cruises’ Insignia is one of the ships that received a failing score, 80 out of 100, due to issues with maintaining proper pH and halogen levels in its drinking water. Inspectors also found that food was kept at unsafe temperatures and was infested with insects.

2. Silver Wind

The Silver Wind, a vessel belonging to Silversea Cruises, also received a failing CDC rating of 79 out of 100. The CDC found that the pool water and drinking water had dangerously low pH and chlorine levels, which made the water unsafe to drink and use. Additionally, they found that the dishwashing area was cluttered with stacks of dirty dishes and that the food was kept at unsafe temperatures.

3. Silver Spirit

Another Silversea vessel, the Silver Spirit, received a low CDC rating in 2019 of 81 out of 100. During the inspection, the CDC inspectors found that many of the crew members on the ship had a stomach virus but were still working at the time, thus risking spreading the illness to passengers. Additionally, the dishwasher was found to be contaminated with food debris and food was left in areas that were open to cross-contamination.

4. Safari Endeavor

The Safari Endeavour, a vessel with Un-Cruise Adventures, received a rating of 79 out of 100 due to a number of factors, including an outbreak of gastroenteritis, as well as contamination of drinks on the vessel. Additionally, their on-board whirlpool spas were shown to be prone to causing a disease outbreak.

5. Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Cruise Line vessels traditionally receive top scores, but the Breakaway was issued a low score of 84 out of 100 in March 2019. The report showed that a staff member continued working even after being diagnosed with the stomach flu. In addition, the hot tubs tested at high extremely high pH levels, and food areas were infested with fruit flies. Leftover food was also stored at unsafe temperatures.

6. Le Boreal

The Le Boreal, a vessel owned by Compagnie Du Ponant, received a CDC rating of 84 of 100. The ship was found to have food and beverage areas that were infested with flies. Additionally, food was stored at unsafe temperatures or left in dirty areas.
