MSC Cruises Resumes U.S. Operations with the Launch of Meraviglia in Miami

MSC Cruises is resuming operations in the U.S. after 18 months of being shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of, MSC Meraviglia. The ship is set to depart from Port Miami, making it the first in the MSC fleet to restart operations in the U.S.

Cruise ships have been anxious to restart U.S. operations for some time. MSC Cruises, has been offering cruises in Europe for months now, but the MSC Meraviglia will be the first to resume sailings in the U.S.

The MSC Meraviglia is scheduled to sail three- and four- night cruises to the Bahamas, stopping for a call at Ocean Cay, MSC Cruises’ private island. Beginning September 2021, the ship will start sailing seven-night eastern and western Caribbean cruises, as well. These week-long voyages will include stops at Ocean Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas, as well as Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

The MSC Meraviglia vessel weighs 171,598 gross tons and can carry up to 4,415 guests at double occupancy. The vessel has 15 passenger decks, including a Polar Aquapark, F1 simulators, and the MSC Yacht Club.

Passengers will be tested upon embarkation, and periodic testing of the crew will occur during the voyage, among a number of other protocols.  Those passengers who are unvaccinated will have more restrictions than vaccinated ones in terms of what they can do while on the ship.

The MSC Meraviglia is not the only MSC vessel scheduled to begin sailing from the U.S. The MSC Divina is scheduled to resume cruises from the U.S. starting September 16 with a seven-night voyage out of Port Canaveral. Port Canaveral is a new homeport for MSC Cruises. The company anticipates expanding their U.S. operations over the next several years.
